In the current context of the energy transition, it is becoming essential to find solutions capable of guaranteeing stability to the electricity grid, especially in view of the increasing deployment of infrastructure for recharging electric vehicles. The simultaneous increase in demand and production from renewable sources is in fact putting pressure on the grid, creating real bottlenecks that limit its reliability and ability to respond at critical times. Hub Plus, the innovative energy storage and distribution system designed by E-GAP, was created to meet this challenge. It is a proprietary technology that represents a true intelligent infrastructure, capable of adapting to the needs of the network and actively contributing to its efficiency.
The Hub Plus is much more than a simple battery system: it is a complete platform, designed to store energy when it is cheapest – i.e. at times of low demand or when prices are low – and return it at times of higher demand, thus helping to even out peaks and lighten the load on the grid. With a two-way exchange power of 1 MW and a storage capacity of 2 MWh, the system is designed to operate flexibly in both industrial and semi-public contexts, offering a concrete response to the needs of energy transition.
One of the distinctive aspects of the Hub Plus is its ability to integrate with mobile charging infrastructures, making it an ideal solution to support the electrification of fleets. Thanks to its operational intelligence, it can absorb energy in times of abundance – for example, when there is overproduction from renewable sources – and release it when the grid needs it most. This not only improves the resilience of the system, but also allows it to optimise energy costs and offer advanced services, such as capacity market support or secondary dispatching.
The first Hub Plus is already operational in Buccinasco, in the province of Milan, and represents the prototype of a series of future projects, designed on an even larger scale.
From the outset, E-GAP’s goal was to develop a turnkey solution capable of optimising energy management, not only in terms of storage, but also in terms of integration into grid services, energy markets and electricity system flexibility. The Hub Plus is designed to meet these needs, offering an advanced platform for mobility electrification and grid support. Its modular and scalable architecture makes it a strategic solution for industry operators, utilities and infrastructure funds interested in investing in innovative energy technologies that generate value, improve the efficiency of the electricity system and enable new business models based on intelligent energy management.
The system’s impact can be felt most tangibly in recharging depots, where the Hub Plus enables optimised energy management, reduces the risk of overloading and reduces operating costs. In an urban context, this means greater operational continuity, less risk of blackouts and more harmonious integration with renewable sources.
