Renewable energy

« Back to Glossary Index

Renewable energy is a type of energy obtained from natural sources that are virtually inexhaustible or regenerate over time, unlike fossil energy sources (such as coal, oil and natural gas) that are finite and non-renewable. Renewable energy sources include the sun (solar energy), wind (wind power), water (hydropower), the earth’s heat (geothermal energy) and biomass (organic material such as wood, agricultural waste, organic waste) that can be used to produce energy through combustion or chemical processes.
Renewable energy is considered a form of clean energy, as its production generates very little or no greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants, thus contributing to climate change mitigation.
Renewable energy plays an essential role in the context of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles use electric engines powered by batteries that store electrical energy, and using renewable energy to recharge them is becoming an increasingly popular and sustainable choice.
