Range anxiety (or anxiety about autonomy)

« Back to Glossary Index

The term ‘range anxiety’ refers to a psychological condition of worry or concern experienced by some drivers of electric vehicles due to the possibility of running out of power during a journey because of limited battery range.
Since electric vehicles depend on the energy stored in their batteries to function, the fear of not being able to reach a charging station or the worry of being stranded with a dead battery can cause anxiety and stress. This phenomenon occurs primarily in people used to driving internal combustion engine vehicles, who are familiar with the network of conventional service stations.
Range anxiety can be influenced by several factors, including the actual range of the vehicle, traffic conditions, the availability of charging stations, and the accessibility of these stations. If a driver constantly worries about the remaining battery life and whether this is enough to reach their destination or the next charging station, they may experience range anxiety.
